The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in supporting the financial health and compliance of the organization. This position is responsible for overseeing daily accounting functions, preparing financial reports, managing audits, ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations, and supporting the budgeting process. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting background, nonprofit experience, and a commitment to the mission of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain and oversee all general ledger activity, including monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and grant reports for internal and external stakeholders
Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, 2 CFR 200, etc.)
Manage accounts payable and receivable, payroll allocations, and expense reimbursements
Monitor grant expenditures and assist in preparing reports for funders
Assist in annual audit and 990 preparation by providing requested documentation and working directly with external auditors
Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process and monitor budget-to-actual performance
Reconcile bank and investment accounts monthly
Maintain proper documentation and ensure adherence to internal controls
Provide financial insights and support to program managers and leadership
Supervise or mentor junior accounting staff as applicable
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the nonprofit sector
Strong knowledge of fund accounting, restricted/unrestricted funds, and grant management
Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud) and Excel
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment
Education: Bachelors Degree
Certification: Certified Public Accountant , Certified Treasury Professional
